Hilo, Hawaii -- A golden opportunity for the Sunbirds to remain perfect in the PacWest didn't get by
Jorge Chedraui who knocked in a game-winner in the second overtime for a 2-1 win over Hawaii Hilo.
"I thought we were the better team today," said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "We were a little off today, but in the end we came out with the win."
Chedraui's goal was the first overtime goal scored by Fresno Pacific (7-2-1, 5-0 PacWest) since October 1, 2011 when former Sunbird
Paul Islas hit a golden goal against UC Santa Cruz.
Gustavo Silva assisted on the goal with a hard cross through the defense that found a wide-open Chedraui who had the goalkeeper beat for his fifth goal of the season. The Vulcans (3-5-1, 1-4-1 PacWest) thought they had the match won on a free kick in overtime, but Hilo was called offside and the goal was disallowed.
"I thought they had won the game," said Ramirez. "They were on the field celebrating, but luckily the offside call brought it back."
Eddie Cabral put away his first goal of the season in the 28th minute to give the Sunbirds a 1-0 lead before UHH answered back quickly in the 34th minute with a goal of their own.
Fabian Rangel stopped two shots in the match on a shortened field the teams were forced to play on due to weather conditions at Hilo's original, and much larger field.
The change in venue constrained the open and possessive style of play the Sunbirds are accustomed which, combined with a lot of high pressure from the Vulcan defense, led to a sloppy start for the Sunbirds. A halftime adjustment led to the quick goal by Cabral and was a key component in the game-winner in overtime.
"At half we talked about finding a way to get behind them on the outside. We weren't making them turn towards their own goal in the first half," said Ramirez. "Our guys did a good job, especially on that final goal, in the second half of creating more chances for us."
With the win Fresno Pacific moves into a three-way tie for first place with Azusa Pacific and California Baptist. All three schools have 15 points in conference, but FPU is the only team without a loss in the PacWest.
The Sunbirds will look to avenge their one loss in Hawaii from a season ago when they take on Hawaii Pacific, the tenth ranked team in the region, on Monday at 6 p.m.
