Despite holding a lead midway through the first half the Sunbirds were unable to hang on and fell to 0-12 on the season in a 59-42 loss to Azusa Pacific.
It was another rough shooting night for FPU (0-12, 0-5) who has failed to shoot over 30-percent in their last four games. The Sunbirds shot just 15-57 from the field for 26.3-percent and just 5-27 from three for 18.5-perecent.
Sienna Gonzales led Fresno Pacific in scoring for the first time this season with eight points on 3-11 shooting including 2-10 from three. It marked the first time this season that neither PacWest scoring leader Keairra White nor redshirt freshman Charde Stevens led the Sunbirds in scoring. Both players finished with seven points in the game.
White, much like the rest of the team, struggled mightily from the floor going just 2-11 and 0-4 from three falling well short of her season average 20.5 points per game.
FPU fell behind early as the Cougars raced out to a 7-2 lead thanks to Hannah Kenny who tallied three points and two rebounds in the first three minutes of the game. The Sunbirds answered back with a 10-3 run to take the lead at 12-10 despite starting the game just 4-12 from the floor.
The Cougars came back to tie the game at 18-18 then hit back-to-back threes to take a six point lead, which they would no let go of.
A balanced scoring attack over the final four minutes brought FPU to within four heading into halftime.
Following the break the Sunbirds seemed to struggle as they have much of the season and allowed a big run by Azusa Pacific that eventually led to a 15 point lead for the Cougars with 9:42 remaining in the game.
The lead stayed around 15 for the remainder of the game as turnovers continued to plague coach Scholz's squad who committed 14 in the second half and 25 in the game.
Azusa Pacific got a big double-double from Kenny who dropped 12 points and 11 rebounds on Fresno Pacific. The Cougars also got 11 points and eight rebounds from Kelly Hardeman in the win.
The Sunbirds will be back at home next weekend when they take on #15 Grand Canyon in a rematch of a 97-59 loss in Phoenix on December 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in the Special Events Center.
