Sunbirds stomp Chaminade for first win of the season

Box Score

After a 0-14 start to the season the Sunbirds were able to get the monkey off their backs and secure their first win of the season in a 80-56 win over Chaminade University.

Fresno Pacific (1-14, 1-7 PacWest) had three players in double figures in their highest scoring output of the season. Keairra White had a game-high 23, her first 20-point game since a 22 point effort in a 64-58 loss to Point Loma. Kerri Stephanoff poured in 18 and Charde Stevens chipped in 11 off the bench.

Chaminade (1-11, 1-6 PacWest) shot 45-perecent in the first half but were held to just 27.6-perecent in the second, including just 1-5 from three. Nikki Tauau scored 14 for the Silverswords who had just one player in double-digit points.

The Sunbirds struggled to find consistency in the first several minutes of the game committing unforced turnovers, but FPU closed the half on a 21-11 run to go up 42-32 heading into the break.

In the second half the Sunbirds were dominant on the glass out rebounding the Silverswords 22-9 on the offensive glass and 29-24 on the defense glass. Seven players finished with at least five rebounds for Fresno Pacific and Stephanoff completed a double-double with her 11 boards, five of which were offensive.

After keeping the game level through the first 13 minutes of the game the Silverswords looked to be hanging with FPU. But the Sunbirds out-scored CUH 20-6 over the final 7:16 of the game. Stephanoff scored seven of the final 20 points for Fresno Pacific who cruised to their first win of the season.

The two teams combined for 44 turnovers in the game. The Sunbirds committed 10 turnovers in each half and Chaminade coughed the ball up 24 times in the game.

FPU will look for win number two on Monday night against BYU-Hawaii when the Seasiders come to Fresno. Game time is set for 5:30 pm.
