Fresno Pacific moved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of wins over American River 17-13 and 20-8. The Sunbirds were powered by a pair of dominant performances from freshman Daniel Seymour who scored six goals in each game.

The Sunbirds (3-1) started off a bit shaky in the first game against the Beavers (0-2). After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead FPU was outscored 6-3 the rest of the half and went into the half down 5-6.

“It was the first home game and you always have those initial jitters,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “In the third quarter they really started to find their groove.”

FPU came out of the break clicking on all cylinders as they outscored the Beavers 6-2 in the frame. Glenn Lyon and Andreas Sahlberg each tallied two goals in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter Seymour shut the door on American River with two goals in the frame, part of his six in the match.

“Seymour is a freshman who is coming in confident,” said Suhovy. “He is really opening up that whole right side of the pool for us.”

In the second game the Sunbirds fell behind early 4-2, but a strong second quarter from Seymour and a pair of saves by goalkeeper Jake Finney put FPU up by one at the break.

The third quarter belonged to Zlatko Vlasic who racked up four of his five goals in the match in the frame and helped put the Sunbirds up by six.

In the fourth Fresno Pacific used rock solid defense and poured in six more goals on route to the 20-8 victory.

“Each game we continue to adjust and learn to play with each other,” said Suhovy. “The second game started off slow but as we go into a consistent flow we really took off with the game. I'm excited to see how we continue to develop this season.”

The Sunbirds will be back in action next Saturday at Sunnyside Aquatics center when they take on Cal Tech at noon.
