Fresno Pacific finished their first Hawaii trip in style with a 7-1 victory over the Chaminade Silverswords.
The Sunbirds (5-4, 3-3) once again used an early goal to jump out on top of the Silverswords (1-5-1) on route to the blowout win.
“For us to come out and do what we did just shows what we are capable of doing,” said head coach Jaime Ramirez. “We really had control of the game in terms of possession and that is the way we play, a possession game.”
Fabricio Nazare started things off for FPU scoring in the 6th minute to give the Sunbirds the early 1-0 lead. Nazare stepped up big for a team that was without senior forward Paul Islas for a second straight game. He finished the game with two goals and three assists, leading FPU with seven points.
Rodrigo Vianna struck next for Fresno Pacific in the 29th minute on a nice pass from Guillermo Talancon and placed it past keeper Conor Knox. Knox allowed all seven goals by FPU before being pulled in favor of Tom Higgins in the 74th minute.
Alvaro Nogales also put in two goals on the day including the third goal early in the second half that really put the game out of reach for Chaminade. Forward Bruno Pessoa also put in two goals for FPU to make three players with two goals.
In goal for the Sunbirds Fabian Rangel filled in for Steven Waite getting his second start of the season. He, along with the FPU defense, managed to hold the Silverswords at bay and looked primed for the team's fourth shutout of the season before Colton Gallt scored off a set piece from nearly mid-field.
“I really thought we were going to get the shutout there,” said Ramirez. “I was really hoping for [Fabian] to get the shutout, but that free kick we played too far back and they got it in. It was a shame, but we still got the result.”
With the win the men finish out their first trip to Hawaii going 3-1 dropping their only match on a late goal allowed against Hawaii Pacific. The experience has been eye opening for the Sunbirds who have learned a few things about playing in the aloha state.
“It was eye-opening for us,” said Ramirez. “We definitely learned that you have to have a good plan to recover and be ready for the next game. I can't wait to get back home and get into our regular routine there.”
