In the final game of the Cal State LA Thanksgiving Classic the Sunbirds were unable to find their first win of the year dropping an 81-53 decision to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Fresno Pacific (0-6) shot just 25.4-percent from the floor on 16-63 shooting and were outrebounded 58-28 in their largest loss of the young season.
"16-63 explains a lot in this game," said head coach Erin Scholz. "We lack teamwork which makes positiive momentum hard to come by. As bad as this loss was for us, we found a group at the end of the game who finished with tremendous effort. If we could have had that from the tipoff, it could have been quite a different outcome."
Charde Stevens led the way in scoring for FPU with 17 points on 4-12 shooting from the floor. She also hit 9-12 from the stripe, the most attempts by a Sunbird in the game. Keairra White was the only other player to reach double figures for Fresno Pacific.
The Sunbirds were with the Toros (1-3) early in the first half keeping the game tied after just over five minutes of play. CSUDH proceeded to go on an 11-4 run from that point and went into the half up by 12.
Out of the break Cal State Dominguez Hills went on another 11-4 run to put the game out of reach for the Sunbirds.
FPU won the turnover battle for the first time this season committing just 17 turnovers while getting 27. That gave a 22-18 points off turnovers advantage to Fresno Pacific, but they couldn't translate that to more with the shooting woes.
Fresno Pacific will be back in action next weekend against California Baptist in their PacWest opener. The game will be in Riverside at 5 pm.
