Paul Islas was on fire on Senior Night scoring a hat trick, his third of the season, in a 4-0 over the Point Loma Sea Lions. Each of the goals was scored by a senior and senior Jorge Dominguez was credited with two assists.
Islas scored two goals in the span of 29-seocnds, including the game-winner, and added a third early in the second half. The three goals give Islas 16 on the season and it puts him just five behind head coach Jaime Ramirez for third all-time in goals.
"What can you say about Paul," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "He is an All-American, a hometown kid, and he just embodies the Sunbird way of playing soccer."
The Sunbirds were all over the Sea Lions scoring their first goal in the fourth minute off a lead pass by Dominguez to a wide-open Islas who slotted it past the keeper for the early 1-0 lead. Just thirty seconds later Point Loma turned the ball over deep inside their half and Dominguez found Islas again who made his way through three defenders for the goal and the 2-0 lead.
Senior Rodrigo Vianna was next scoring on a cross by Alvaro Nogales. Vianna put the header in the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Sunbirds were dominant in the first half out shooting the Sea Lions 15-5 and were very rarely backed up in their half of the field.
In the second half Fresno Pacific continued the dominant play and just seven minutes in freshman Alvaro Nogales played it through to Islas who was wide-open for the break-a-way goal.
Point Loma was unable to capitalize on a few chances midway through the half. Junior Ivan Mirkovic and senior Luke Tyler made two incredible saves on the goal line to keep out would be Sea Lion goals. Senior goalkeeper Steven Waite had three saves on the night including one great save in the bottom corner. Freshman Andrew Luis came on in relief of Waite and preserved the shutout with a save of his own.
"I think defensively today we proved that even in a situation when we knew we had the game in hand we can come up big," said Ramirez. "We can keep the ball out of our net and we can score in bunches and we are looking forward to doing that this weekend and putting ourselves in a position to host regionals."
Fresno Pacific is back in action this weekend against Notre Dame de Namur in a match that could secure them a second place finish in conference and the top-seed in the NCCAA West Regional.
