Defense continues to shine, but Sunbirds settle for tie

Box Score

Fresno Pacific played its 6th overtime game of the season, but was forced to settle with a 0-0 tie against visiting Dominican on Thursday night.

The Sunbirds (3-3-4, 3-1-3 PacWest) had many chances, out-shooting the Penguins (3-4-1, 2-2-1 PacWest) 22-13 on the night and holding a 12-5 shots on goal advantage, but couldn't find the net.

Jae Slocum had a golden opportunity, one on one with the keeper, with a minute and a half left in the second overtime, but her shot missed the goal by mere inches after it was deflected by the Penguin keeper.

"Jae's a special player with her speed and her athleticism and we keep encouraging her to take people on," said head coach Erik Farfan. "Credit to Dominican's goalkeeper with a great fingertip save."

Dominican had a couple prime chances minutes before, firing two shots past FPU keeper Sarah King but defender Caressa Archie made two phenomenal saves to back her up.

Slocum created good chances for the Sunbirds all night, but the Penguin defense held strong, led by Megan Herring's 12 saves in goal. Herring, who entered the week fifth in NCAA Division II save percentage (.914) boosted her clip to .936.

"We've just got to continue to believe in our ability to defend well," said Farfan. "We need to continue to work on the final third, something we hope continues to progress and that we become a bit sharper in some of our scoring opportunities. That's the missing piece of the puzzle right now."

FPU faces Holy Names (1-8, 0-6 PacWest) on Saturday at 7:30 pm. The Sunbirds will be hosting Latino Celebration Night which will feature some of the Valley's top Taco Trucks and discounted ticket prices. Tickets will be $2 for general admission with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The event is being put on by the Fresno Pacific Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
