The men continued their offensive tear in a rematch with Dominican in San Rafael. Fresno Pacific netted six goals against the Penguins behind another multi-goal performance from forward Paul Islas.
It took a little bit for the Sunbirds (8-4, 6-3) to get their legs in the game on the unfamiliar artificial turf and the early 5 am bus ride but in the 13th minute they broke through when Rodrigo Vianna played Islas down the middle of the field. Islas put a move on two-time PacWest goalkeeper of the week Erik Anderson and gave FPU the 1-0 lead.
“We really had the better of the chances throughout the game,” said head coach Jaime Ramirez. “We kept just trying and trying and we eventually started getting guys through.”
Fresno Pacific struck again in the 23rd minute when Anderson was called for a foul on Fabricio Nazare in the box that resulted in a penalty kick. Nazare slow played the keeper and punched it through for the goal.
In the 34th minute Islas was at it again this time on the assist from Alvaro Nogales. Nogales placed the pass perfectly just past the feet of the Dominican (7-4, 3-4) center back and it was one-on-one with the keeper. Islas put it past Anderson again and the Sunbirds went up 3-0.
“He's just in that frame of mind right now where he thinks he can score and score at any time,” said Ramirez. “Even though he is injured he is still getting through.”
With the two goals today Islas moves into a tie for fifth place all-time in career goals for Fresno Pacific with 45.
FPU continued to dominate the run of play and possession, a trade-mark of the explosive offense crafted by Ramirez. The Penguins constantly had to clear the ball from the back line and hope for good things going forward.
Those good things never materialized as the Sunbirds defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season behind goalkeeping from both Fabian Rangel and Steven Waite who split time minding the FPU net.
“Steven had a bit of a rough go at it against Hawaii Pacific,” said Raimirez. “But he was positive and I was glad he could get in there today and he played really well for us in the second half. He played the ball a lot and really kept us active at the back.”
Nogales, Gustavo Silva and Bruno Pessoa all added goals after the game was in hand for Fresno Pacific who leads the PacWest in goals scored this season with 49, 19 goals ahead of second place Grand Canyon.
The Sunbirds will try to avenge last years' 5-4 loss to the alumni this Saturday at 6 pm when they meet up again in the annual Alumni Game.
