Fresno Pacific played well against the defending NAIA national champion, but ultimately it would be #13 Azusa Pacific who would prevail as the Cougars left Fresno with a 99-89 win.
The Sunbirds would battle all night against one of the NAIA's most athletic teams, and would tie the game up at 63 with 13 minutes to play before the Cougars steadily pulled away in the final minutes.
FPU had a hard time containing APU's Amber Williams, who was virtually unstoppable inside, on her way to a 32-point, 10-rebound night. Point guard Briana Hall added 29 points and eight assists for the Cougars, who improved to 10-5, 3-2 in GSAC play.
Jenay Herring scored 23 points and had five assists to keep the Sunbirds in it.
Keri Stephanoff added 19 points and eight rebounds, and
Sienna Gonzales made some big three-pointers to finish with 14 points. FPU knocked down 12 three-pointers as a team. The Sunbirds also shot 83 percent from the free-throw line.
The Sunbirds, who have now lost three straight, fall to 10-7, 2-3 in GSAC play. They'll take on an up-and-coming San Diego Christian team on the road this Saturday.
