Fresno Pacific infielder
Andrew Douglas, having just completed a highly-decorated four-year career with the Sunbirds, was helping his parents redo the roof of their house on Tuesday. While ripping off shingles and contemplating what was next for the All-Academic Psychology grad, his phone rang.
On the other end? A scout from the Chicago White Sox telling Douglas to keep his phone on him for the next couple hours.
"I thought it would be a good idea to get off the roof at this point, just so nothing bad would happen because I might have a new employer," said Douglas.
45 minutes later he received another call, this time telling him that he was now a member of the Chicago White Sox organization. Douglas agreed to a minor league contract with the team, and will be assigned to Chicago's Rookie-Advanced affiliate, the Great Falls Voyagers, in Montana.
"This opportunity to be a part of the White Sox organization has been a huge answer to prayer," said Douglas. "This is an opportunity that I have been working toward my whole life and now to get it is incredibly exciting. I have made quite a few phone calls today and it still has not sunk in."
Douglas led the Sunbirds in hitting this season, batting a team-high .331, and was among team leaders in every offensive category, finishing with three home runs, 34 RBI, 14 doubles, 42 runs scored and a team-best 20 stolen bases.
He figured to have a good shot at being picked in the MLB Amateur Draft last week, but went unselected despite possessing all five of the "tools" scouts look for (hitting for average, power, speed, arm strength and fielding). As it turns out, he'll get his chance and FPU coach
Oscar Hirschkorn said it was well deserved.
“I am really happy for Andrew," he said. "With all that he has done here and how hard he has worked in his career here at FPU he deserves this shot. It really is an answer to prayer and I am excited to see what this leads to.”
Douglas flew under the radar despite playing on some very good teams at Kingsburg High School, but began to grow into his frame while at FPU and develop more as a hitter. By his sophomore year he had started to earn regular playing time and as a junior he had developed into one of the team's most feared hitters.
What resulted was a monster season that saw him hit .352 with seven home runs, 20 doubles and 47 RBI while slugging .619 and scoring 51 runs. On April 21, 2010 he put together one of the best games in Golden State Athletic Conference history, going 6-for-8 with three home runs, nine RBI and six runs scored in a win over Biola.
In addition to his many accomplishments on the field Douglas was a class-act off the field, never missing a chance to give back to his community and bless the lives of those around him. Last month he was honored by being named the FPU Athletics "Senior of the Year".
"I would like to thank Coach Hirschkorn, as well as the rest of the FPU coaching staff, my teammates who have helped me through baseball and life, and my mother and father," said Douglas. "Most importantly I would like to thank God who is the one who has given me this opportunity and may I glorify him with the gifts and talents that he has given me."
Former teammate
Jesse Darrah will compete in the same league as Douglas, as he's been assigned to the Missoula Osprey of the Arizona Diamonbacks organization. Darrah, an 8th-round pick last week, is slotted to throw the home opener for Missoula. The two teams compete in the same division, setting up a potential former-Sunbird showdown.
