Sunbirds struggle to finish, drop two games in Bakersfield

Fresno Pacific dropped two hard fought games to Brown and Redlands at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday with scores of 11-10 and 11-9, respectively. The Sunbirds were excited about their level of play, despite the less-than-desirable outcome of both games.

"The Redlands game was practically one of our best this season," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "We've showed a lot of growth and maturity as a team this season."

"We played really well today," said Nicolette Haley. "We focused a lot more on the little things and we never gave up."

#Haley# was the team's leading scorer on the day with six goals. She was followed by Katie Rayner and Jaimie Lugo, each with four and three goals, respectively. Mallory Retig and Michelle Kaplan each had two goals while Jenn Wolter and Jennifer Cobb had one apiece. Dani Mortimer posted 23 saves.

In the first game of the day, versus Brown University, the Sunbirds came out strong, going into the half with a 5-4 lead.

Fresno Pacific would let the Bears back into the game in the second half, though. Brown tied the game 6-6 in the third, and finished the comeback in the fourth to take the 11-10 win.

"We came out strong and let them back into the game," said #Suhovy#. "It was a tough loss."

The Sunbirds played solid against University of the Redlands, taking an early lead to go into half up 6-4.

In a repeat of the morning game, however, the Sunbirds let the Bulldogs come back to tie the game in the third, 7-7. Redlands would then outscore the Sunbirds 4-2 in the fourth to take the 11-9 win.

"We played hard," said #Wolter#. "Though we came up short our team is recognizing the adjustments we need to make to play up to our full potential."

"Though we didn't have the most desirable outcomes, I still feel like we had great games today," said assistant coach Riley Warner

Fresno Pacific will travel to San Diego to compete in the San Diego State University Tournament next weekend.
