Michael Rivera hit two home runs but #15 Fresno Pacific fell 8-6 and 2-1 in a Saturday doubleheader at #8 Point Loma Nazarene.
The Sunbirds, who had won 10 their of last 11 games, fell to 19-11, 13-7 GSAC. PLNU improved to 13-13, 8-11 in conference play.
Game 1
A rough fourth inning did in the Sunbirds in game one on Saturday as #15 Fresno Pacific fell 8-6 at #8 Point Loma Nazarene.
Leading 3-1 after a two-run homer from
Michael Rivera in the top of the 4th, the Sunbirds gave up seven runs in the bottom half.
Aaron Lynn started for the Sunbirds and looked good through three innings before running into trouble in the 4th. After giving up a string of hits that scored three PLNU runs he was relieved by
Kyle Lovero who surrendered a three-run blast to the Sea Lions' Edgar Molina.
FPU would get two back in the 5th with some heads-up baserunning, but despite threatening to score in the 6th, 7th and 8th, couldn't get anything across.
Greg Kilgore allowed the Sunbirds to stay within striking distance, working 3 2/3 scoreless innings out of the pen.
The Sunbirds would have one last chance in the 9th and
Steven Lozier led off with a walk.
Trent Soares doubled down the right field line to score the runner and make it an 8-6 game. A ground out and two fly outs would end the game for FPU however.
Jack Archie got the win for the Sea Lions, pitching five innings and striking out six, while giving up five runs (three earned). Lynn took the loss for FPU and Maurice Wilhelm earned the save for the Sea Lions.
Game 2
The Sunbirds managed just four hits in the second game off PLNU starter Kenny Houser, who finished with a complete game.
Michael Rivera gave the Sunbirds some brief hope, blasting a home run to right field with a full count and two outs in the ninth to make the score 2-1, but the next batter was called out on strikes.
Ryan Castadio and Rivera threw well for the Sunbirds, but the team was victimized by two errors which led to two Sea Lion runs in the 5th and 6th innings. It was the first loss of the season for Castadio. Rivera and
Alec Mehrten each finished with two hits.
The Sunbirds will look to get back on track on Wednesday when they travel to Azusa Pacific.
