The Fresno Pacific men's tennis team rounded up a good week in Las Vegas against D2 opposition with a win against Hawaii Pacific 5-1.Meanwhile the women struggled in a 7-2 loss to the #7 Seawarriors.
In the men's match they started with singles first, allowing FPU to race to a 5-1 lead which left no need for doubles as the Sunbirds had already clinched the win. Kirill Sinitsyn playing at one singles was the only loss of the day playing an in-form Michener who has only lost one match this year.
Sinitsyn started slowly and lost the first set 6.2 but then recovered from 3-5 down and three match points down to win the second set 7.5. A match tie-break was needed to decide the match in which Sinitsyn lost 10-5. The rest of the Sunbird tennis team dealt with Hawaii Pacific in impressive style winning at numbers two through six.
Xavier Smith had a scare in the second set as he was pushed all the way to a tie break but his tie-break win sealed the match for the Sunbirds.
“It was nice to beat Hawaii Pacific because they are a tough team," said coach Neil Castro "I'm pleased we could end what has been a good week on a high note.”
Meanwhile the women's team fell to 8-4 on the season, having lost three of the four matches with NCAA Division II ranked teams. Marie Boura and Yumiko Justin provided the two wins for FPU.
Tomorrow's matches vs. Hope International have been postponed. A makeup date will be announced later. The teams travel to Santa Barbara on Tuesday to face Westmont.
