Box Score
Paul Islas scored two first-half goals and the Sunbirds' hot-streak continued with a 2-0 road shutout of Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego on Saturday. FPU (7-3, 3-0 GSAC) has now won four in a row with Islas scoring eight goals in those four wins.
The team entered Saturday's match looking to avoid a letdown after Wednesday's big win over #5 Azusa Pacific. A road win is tough to come by in the GSAC and the Sunbirds got just that on Saturday, locking the Sea Lions (7-3-1, 1-2 GSAC) down on the defensive end and relying on Islas up-top.
"It took us a while to get going but once we did, Paul was on again," said FPU coach
Jaime Ramirez. "The team showed great patience offensively and great discipline on defense."
Islas would strike back-to-back in the 37th and 39th minute for his 11th and 12th goals of the season. The first came on a perfect touch-pass from
Guilherme Machado while the second was assisted by
Bruno Pessoa as Islas once again showed how dangerous he can be once inside the box. Islas has either a goal or an assist in all 10 of FPU's games this season.
The Sunbirds out-shot PLNU 18-8 on the day with Islas totaling six shots and five on goal.
Steven Waite made two saves to record the shutout as the FPU defense, headed up by Machado and
Luke Tyler, limited the Sea Lions to just two shots on goal.
Today's win, coupled with Wednesday's 3-1 victory over APU, should be more than enough to put the Sunbirds into the NAIA Top 25 for the first time this season when the rankings come out on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, the Sunbirds will play their next opponent, Biola, on the road. The Eagles are 7-2-2, 2-1 GSAC and are receiving votes in the NAIA poll.
The Sunbirds, with their 3-0 GSAC record, now sit atop the conference standings alongside #11 Concordia.
