Sunbirds get back on winning track, down Westmont 3-1

Box Score

Fresno Pacific played three sets of great volleyball on Tuesday night, which was enough to get past visiting Westmont 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 14-25, 25-22).

With the win the Sunbirds improved to 10-4, 6-1 in GSAC play while dropping the Warriors to 5-10, 3-4 GSAC. The Sunbirds were one step ahead of the Warriors all night, except for an abysmal third set which saw FPU trail 17-4 at one point. The team rebounded from the loss in set three however and came out determined what would prove to be the final set.

The victory didn't come without some tension however. FPU was one point away from closing it out at 24-15 before a 7-0 Westmont run suddenly made a fifth set a possibility. Kathleen Anderson was having none of that however, slamming home the last of her match-high 16 kills to end it.

Anderson hit .312 on the night and added five blocks in the win. Martina Gregusova had 14 kills and 10 digs, followed by Jessie Alcorn with 13 kills and Lyndsie Petersen with 10 kills and nine digs. Erica Adachi, still recovering from injury, led the team with 13 digs. Emily Carroll facilitated the offense with 44 assists and was a factor on defense as well with 12 digs.

Tessa Martin led Westmont with 11 kills but the Sunbirds held the Warriors .000 hitting in set two and just .048 in set four. Kristin Schroeder led the Warriors with 18 digs.

FPU is back in action at home this Saturday, hosting #22 Vanguard at 3 pm. The Lions come in with a 14-8 record, 3-4 in GSAC play after falling to #8 Azusa Pacific tonight.
