Sunbirds fall in straight sets to #2 Eagles

Box Score

In a battle of the GSAC's top two teams, #8 Fresno Pacific came up short against #2 Concordia in straight sets Saturday in Irvine. The Sunbirds hit a season-low .071 as a team, falling 25-15, 25-19, 25-16.

With the win, Concordia (26-1, 13-0 GSAC) locked up its first ever GSAC championship, bring FPU's run of 11 straight GSAC titles to an end. The Eagles would go on to defeat #1 Texas-Brownsville in a five-set thriller later in the night, and will likely be the NAIA's top-ranked team next week.

Martina Gregusova led the Sunbirds (14-8, 10-4 GSAC) with 11 kills, while Erica Adachi posted 19 assists and 11 digs. Kat Hutcheson added nine digs in the loss.

The Sunbirds were blown out in the first set, before putting up more of a fight in the second. When the Eagles pulled away to close out set two though it really deflated any perceived Sunbird momentum and the team came out flat, hitting just .036 in set three.

Brooke Marino and Alex Bozoian led the Eagles with 10 kills each. Fei Gao had 15 digs and Jenee Henderson had 23 assists.

FPU will look to stop its two-game skid when they take on Westmont in Santa Barbara on Tuesday night. Westmont scored a huge upset tonight over Biola.
