Sunbirds shut out for first time with 1-0 loss to Vanguard

Box Score

Fresno Pacific failed to capitalize on numerous chances and #23 Vanguard did two things no team has accomplished this season: shut out the Sunbirds, and defeat FPU on its home field.

Kevin Cornwall's goal with 16 minutes left was the difference maker for the Lions (10-4, 4-1 GSAC) as the Sunbirds (8-4, 4-1 GSAC) dropped their first conference match of the season and saw their five-game win streak snapped.

FPU created many chances, but couldn't convert despite 17 shots. Paul Islas led the team with six shots, many of which ended up just wide of the goal. Islas had scored or assisted on a goal in 11 straight games this season but saw that streak come to an end. Rodrigo Vianna, Guilherme Machado and Bruno Pessoa had great chances to score as well, and Gustavo Silva and Fabricio Nazare did a good job of distributing, but the team didn't get the bounces it needed tonight.

Steven Waite had a tremendous day in goal, making some spectacular saves to finish with seven total. The Sunbirds made VU goalie Cody Adams work as well, as he finished with five saves.

It was an exciting match that featured 35 total shots and seven yellow cards handed out between the two teams. Ultimately it was a game FPU let get away, as the Sunbirds should have put at least three goals in the net in the first half alone, but allowed Vanguard to linger and finally strike.

FPU is now in a three-way tie for first place with the Lions and #9 Concordia, who got upset by Hope International today. The Sunbirds are still likely to make their way into the national rankings, due to a 3-1 win at #21 Biola earlier in the week. FPU takes on The Master's (9-1-3, 2-1-2 GSAC) on Wednesday at 3 pm.
