Sunbirds on wrong end of defensive battle in 1-0 loss to Stanislaus

Box Score

CSU Stanislaus 1, Fresno Pacific 0.

Fresno Pacific fought hard for a full 90 minutes Thursday night, but it was the visiting CSU Stanislaus Warriors who would put away the game's only goal and hand the Sunbirds a 1-0 loss.

After 70 minutes of scoreless play, it was the Warriors finally putting a shot past FPU goalie Catherine Michaelis, who had an exceptional night in goal for the Sunbirds making seven saves.

CSUS's Marissa Dunaway had a point-blank shot at the goal, but Michaelis made a diving stop. The ball deflected off her, giving the Warriors a second chance and it was freshman forward Karenee Demery hammering a shot into the top left of the goal in her first collegiate game.

The Sunbirds would have one golden opportunity to tie it, when Maghan Wright perfectly placed a ball into the box on a free kick. However the Sunbirds did not get into position in time and were unable to get a quality shot off. FPU struggled offensively for much of the night, getting off just three shots and no corner kicks.

FPU's defense held its own all night, in a game that got more physical as the night wore on. Jae Slocum in particular was key in limiting the Warriors opportunities in the first half. Still CSUS outshot the Sunbirds 15 to 3 and 8-2 in shots on goal.

CSU Stanislaus (1-0) wins its season opener against the Sunbirds for the second straight year. Millie Brown recorded a shutout in goal for the Warriors.

The Sunbirds (1-2) travel to Oregon next weekend for games against Corban College and one of the NAIA's top  teams, #3 Concordia (OR), on Friday and Saturday. They return home the following Wednesday, September 15, to host Menlo College.
