FPU snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday when
Shawn Grieco scored 30 seconds into overtime to defeat visiting Holy Names 2-1.
Grieco found himself in perfect position after
Jorge Becerra, who had just subbed in to begin the overtime, played the ball into the box. Grieco lunged at the ball, but it was deflected. He maintained his balance though and delivered a perfect shot past the defense to seal a hard-fought, much-needed win for the Sunbirds.
It was the perfect ending to what was an otherwise frustrating game for the Sunbirds, who had most of the ball control and outshot the Hawks 14-5, but had been unable to pull away.
Paul Islas had put the Sunbirds on top in the first half, taking a cross from
Chris Young and burying it into the left side of the net. The Sunbirds took the 1-0 lead into the break, but HNU would respond just two minutes into the second half.
Diego Orellana broke away from the defense and blasted a shot on goal that was blocked by a diving Gildardo Villaruel. HNU's Doug Alves was right there to pick it up, however, and score the equalizer. Those two shots were the Hawks' only shots on goal all day.
FPU maintained its composure throughout the second half, limiting the Hawks' chances and wearing down the opposition. It paid off when Grieco netted his first goal of the season.
The Sunbirds improve to 2-4 on the year and drop the Hawks to 0-4-1. FPU plays host to Menlo College on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
