MONTEREY, Calif. - Fresno Pacific (1-8) struggled against their first nationally ranked opponent as they fell to No. 19 Santa Clara 6-16, but fought hard in their second game against CSU Monterey Bay. However, their efforts were not enough to make up a 0-4 deficit as they lost 7-9.
Borbala Toth led the Sunbirds with four goals, scoring two goals in each of their games.
Nicolette Haley and
Brittney Guerrero each followed with two goals apiece. Guerrero scored once in both games while Haley put in both her goals against Monterey Bay.
Jessica Esau played the goalie cage most of the weekend for the Sunbirds. Esau had eight saves in five quarters.
Dani Mortimer came in the final three quarters of the Monterey Bay game to save eight shots as well, as the Sunbirds attempted to come back on Monterey Bay.
The Sunbirds fell behind early 0-4, but made a 4-1 run in the second quarter to pull within one by halftime. Unfortunately, the Sunbirds could not hold on as they lost by two goals at the end of the game.
Coach
Bryan Suhovy complimented his girls' play, "We fought hard all four quarters [against Monterey Bay]. We had several great shots that hit the bar and just didn't go our way."
The Sunbirds' next challenge will be on Friday, February 12 in Fresno as No. 12 Hartwick comes into town. Fresno Pacific struggled against No. 19 Santa Clara and will need to step up their game to get a big home win. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
