Sunbirds test #5 Vanguard in GSAC home opener

Fresno Pacific hung tough with #5 Vanguard for most of the game on Saturday, before falling away in the second half to lose 63-49.

Jessica Torrecillas had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Sunbirds, who led for much of the first half and trailed by just three with 10 and a half minutes left in the game. Vanguard would end the game on a 21-10 run though.

"We need to put two halves together," said FPU head coach Erin Scholz after the game. "We had good focus and confidence in the first half, really attacking their zone."

Scholz added that the team lost some of its focus as the second half went on. "We lost some confidence in the second half after a couple calls didn't go our way," she said. "We need to maintain mental effort throughout the entire game. All in all, I'm still encouraged for what the season holds for us."

Michelle Rebozzi added 13 points for FPU, who falls to 4-2, 0-2 in the GSAC. Kelly Thompson had seven assists. The Sunbirds turned the ball over 27 times in the loss. The Sunbirds only had four free-throw attempts compared to Vanguard's 21.

After beginning the season with the GSAC's two top-ranked teams, the Sunbirds face another tough GSAC opponent on Tuesday night when they face The Master's at 5:30 pm.
