The Sunbirds (4-1) play what may be their toughest GSAC game of the year in the conference opener tonight against the GSAC-favorite Cougars. APU (6-1) comes in with a number two national ranking after returning five starters from a team that lost in the national championship game a year ago.

The lone loss on the season for APU is to #1 Union (Tenn.) and the Cougars have had little trouble otherwise. FPU and APU have two common opponents this season. The Cougars defeated Holy Names 79-50, a team the Sunbirds lost to 76-71 last week. APU also defeated William Jessup 83-52, while the Sunbirds knocked off WJU by a score of 55-52.

The Cougars defeated FPU in both meetings last season, 81-65 in Fresno and 75-65 at Azusa. Jessica Torrecillas averaged 21 points in those two games for the Sunbirds.

FPU enters its conference opener coming off two road victories over Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon. The Sunbirds (5-2) now take on the NAIA's #1-ranked team, a Cougar-squad that returns the majority of its players from a team that lost in the national title game last season and added some very talented transfers.

Despite the fact that the Cougars are the preseason conference favorite and have a 67-18 all-time record against FPU, the Sunbirds can draw confidence from the fact that they have been in this position before.

After not winning a game at Azusa since 1992, the Sunbirds have won the last two road meetings with the Cougars, including an 85-75 victory last season. Two seasons ago, current Sunbird point guard Adam Kado filled in for an injured starter and scored a career-high 26 points to lead FPU to victory, snapping the 16-year streak.

The number one Cougars showed their mortality in the season-opener, falling 81-79 to NCAA D3 Claremont Mudd-Scripps. However the Cougars have since won four straight.
