Box Score
Fresno Pacific was eliminated from the GSAC playoffs on Wednesday night, suffering a 3-0 home loss to Biola.
Kennedy Chongo scored twice as the Eagles shut out the Sunbirds for the second time this season. Both losses came at home.
The Sunbirds got off 17 shots and six corner kicks, but were unable to score off a stout Eagle defense. The Sunbirds played without All-GSAC forward
Gustavo Da Silva, who accumulated too many yellow cards and had to sit out a game.
Much like the first meeting between the two teams, the Eagles scored two first-half goals and held on for the victory.
Phillip Friehe got the Eagles on the board in the 33rd minute, heading in a cross from Zach Bautista that deflected off the Sunbird defense. The Eagles would score again six minutes later when a player went down in the box, resulting in an FPU yellow card and a penalty kick. Chongo converted the kick for the 2-0 lead.
Chongo would strike again seven minutes into the second half, using his speed to break away from the defense and score unassisted. The Sunbirds had one very good opportunity to score later in the half, when
Bruno Pessoa got a wide open look at the goal but the shot went just wide.
Biola (8-9-1) moves on to the GSAC semifinals on Saturday, traveling to top-seed Vanguard. FPU's season ends at 9-9.
The Sunbirds had an up-and-down season typical of a team as inexperienced and talented as this year's group was. FPU fans can be encouraged looking to the future as the team has a young nucleus to build around with Da Silva and
Paul Islas.
Mihailo Jovanovic is a presence that can't be replaced simply by filling a roster spot, so leaders will have to emerge from this group, but many freshmen and sophomores saw significant time on the field this season and should be ready to take that next step.
