Men's soccer drops hard-fought game to first-place CBU

Box Score

Fresno Pacific fought hard all game, but surrendered a late first-half goal and another in the second half to fall 2-0 to visiting #7 Cal Baptist on Saturday.

The loss snaps a five-game FPU winning streak, dropping the Sunbirds to 6-5, 3-1 GSAC. The Lancers improved to 5-0 in the conference, 11-1 overall.

The first half was played very evenly, with both teams having legitimate chances and keeping the ball for extended periods of time. Paul Islas found his way into the box a couple of times, and missed a golden one-on-one opportunity. Gustavo Da Silva also had a great shot that hit off the crossbar.

With just 1:10 remaining in the half, a critical Sunbird defensive error would lead to the first goal. A pass was intercepted by CBU's Tiburcio Casillas, who dribbled up and had a clear shot at the goal.

The Sunbirds went into halftime down 1-0, but the Lancers came out stronger in the second half, maintaining more of the ball control and continuing to create opportunities. The Lancers would capitalize on one of those opportunities in the 72nd minute on a corner kick by Heitor Santarem.

Santarem crossed the ball and Jonathan Garcia came running in and blasted a header at the goal. It was deflected by FPU keeper Gildardo Villaruel right back to CBU's Tyler Mitchell who headed it in for the 2-0 lead.

Villaruel made five saves on the day and Steven Waite subbed in to make two more. CBU's Jeff Redinger had a good day in goal, making six saves in the shutout victory.

The Sunbirds go on the road this week, facing Westmont on Wednesday at 3 pm.
