Two late goals doom Sunbirds at Vanguard

Box Score

Fresno Pacific suffered a tough loss on Friday night, falling 2-1 at #17 Vanguard despite leading 1-0 with less than 15 minutes to play.

Mihailo Jovanovic scored unassisted from 35 yards out in the 59th minute to give the Sunbirds (8-7, 5-3 GSAC) a 1-0 lead. The Lions (8-7, 7-1 GSAC) would respond though in the 77th minute when Jack Plummer passed to Adam Holstein who blasted a shot past FPU keeper Gildardo Villaruel.

The score would not be tied for long as just over a minute later, after an FPU foul, Plummer put through a deep cross that Mario Merdzic was able to drive into the right corner of the net for a 2-1 VU lead.

Trailing 2-1, the Sunbirds were unable to get a shot off in the final 12 minutes. VU outshot FPU 18-7 on the night. Villaruel made eight saves in goal for FPU.

The Sunbirds have another difficult road game next week as they take on #20 Azusa Pacific (12-3-1, 5-2-1 GSAC). After tonight's loss FPU holds just a half-game lead over Biola for fourth place, the final slot for a home playoff game. The Eagles hold the tiebreaker after beating FPU 2-0 this week.
