Sunbirds soar past Warriors 4-1

Box Score

Four different players scored as Fresno Pacific notched a key road victory on Wednesday, defeating Westmont 4-1. The win brings the Sunbirds to 4-1 in conference play.

Guilherme Machado got the scoring going 10 minutes in, knocking in a close shot after a header from Paul Islas. Twenty minutes later, Shawn Grieco added to the FPU lead with a shot from the right past the Warrior keeper after passes from Alexis Hernandez and Mihailo Jovanovic.

The Sunbirds played very well defensively in the first half and capitalized on Warrior mistakes to create more opportunities. FPU would maintain control of the game into the second half.

Islas had been relatively quiet in the first half, but it didn't take long for the Sunbirds' leading goal-scorer to cause havoc for the Warrior defense. On a quick pass from Machado that hit Islas on the run, the sophomore forward drilled a shot from 15 yards out to give FPU a 3-0 lead in the 57th minute.

FPU extended the lead to 4-0 in the 71st minute when Machado crossed the ball from the right side with both Islas and Jovanovic waiting at the top of the box. Islas quickly touched it to Jovanovic, who drove in the 10-yard shot for the goal.

Westmont would finally begin to get some good looks offensively after that goal, but it was too little, too late for the Warriors. Isaac Thompkins got by the defense and scored in the 72nd minute to give WC its first goal. Minutes later the Warriors would have another goal called off after the FPU keeper was fouled on the play.

The Sunbirds take this momentum into Saturday's game when they take on last-place San Diego Christian (1-8-1, 0-5 GSAC).
