Men's soccer earn 3-0 shutout versus Holy Names

The Sunbird men's soccer team relied on a first half barrage to take down Holy Names University 3-0 Tuesday afternoon. FPU scored all three of its goals in the first 30 minutes to secure the victory and improve to 4-1 on the season.

FPU freshman Rodrigo Vianna Ferreira put the Sunbirds up early with a strike in the 11th minute to tally his 4th of the season. Vianna beat the Hawks defender to the ball in the box and slotted it into the left side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Guilherme Machado doubled the Sunbird lead in the 25th minute with a goal of his own that found the left side of the Holy Names goal once again.

Just five minutes later, freshman sensation Vianna struck again to record his second of the contest, and fifth of the campaign. Vianna was first to a rebound that followed an FPU shot on goal, and converted it to round out the scoring.

"I thought we played well in the first half," FPU head coach Jaime Ramirez said. "I was happy with our strikers and thought they did well at producing our goals."

Fresno Pacific had the edge in shots (19-10) and corner kicks (3-1), but could not get on the board in the second half of play.

"With that said, our substitutes need to do a better job of maintaining the level of play throughout the entire match so that we continue to play the way we were playing [in the first half] and be effective," Ramirez added.
