FRESNO, Calif. - The #6 Sunbird men's basketball team (17-1 GSAC, 24-1) clinched a GSAC title Tuesday evening with a 97-84 win over visiting Westmont College, FPU's first conference championship since 1990-1991. With the win, the men's basketball team also tied a school record for most wins in a season (24) that dates back to the 1994-1995 campaign.
Five players scored in double figures for FPU to help the 'Birds go on to the 13 point victory.
Senior guard/forward Marcus West scored a game high 19 points while teammate James Lewis Jr. put up 18 points for the Sunbirds.
Sophomore forward Jordan Wild had a solid night as well netting 13 points, and junior forward Kendall Holmes put up 11 on the night for the orange and blue. Junior guard Adam Kado rounded off the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
“This was an extremely special night for our program,” acknowledged FPU assistant coach Chris Wright. “It's been a long time since Fresno Pacific has won a GSAC championship.”
“Winning conference was a goal we set at the beginning of the year," Wright added. “Very few people believed we could actually do it and we wanted to prove them wrong.”
