Men's soccer falls to #21 Concordia 6-2

The Sunbird men's soccer team got off to a slow start versus Concordia University, conceding six first half goals in a 6-2 loss Saturday afternoon. The deficit was too much for FPU to overcome, despite scoring two goals and battling to an even second half.

CUI opened the scoring in the 11th minute on a Joel Smith goal, followed by Roi Castro's strike in the 21st. Goals by Concordia's Ryan Angel (28;48), Jon Fahey (32:38), and Kyle Hollomon (32:39) gave the Eagles the 5-0 lead before FPU was able to get on the board.

FPU senior Nehemias Blanco netted on a direct free kick taken from outside of the penalty box in the 36th minute, but Concordia again answered just two minutes later. Mickey Mendoza's goal in the 38th minute allowed CUI to retake momentum and extend the lead to 6-1 going into the halftime break.

FPU freshman Paul Islas scored the only goal of the second period in the 87th minute, as the Sunbirds played with much more spirit and determination in half.

With the loss, the Sunbirds fall to 4-3-1 (0-2-1 GSAC) and will travel to face UC Santa Cruz Tuesday, October 6th.
