FRESNO, CA. - The Sunbird men's soccer team fell to #7 Azusa Pacific 2-0 Wednesday evening at FPU's Ramirez Field. Fresno Pacific conceded two first half goals in the loss, but were unable to find a way back into the match against a well organized Cougar squad.
APU's first strike came in the 25th minute when Vini Dantas received a pass from teammate Dana Yoshizu and converted to make it a 1-0 game.
Azusa's Sam Sprauer scored again for the Cougars in the 40th minute on an unassisted goal for the 2-0 APU lead. Sprauer's shot was taken from the top left corner of the Sunbird penalty box and beat FPU goalkeeper
Tim Nightingale into the bottom left side of the Fresno Pacific goal.
The Sunbirds controlled large portions of the match while outshooting the Cougars 15-9 and had the edge in corners 6-3, but were unable to capitalize.
"Two mistakes cost us the game," acknowledged FPU head coach
Jaime Ramirez. " I was proud of our effort but we are still unsettled in the back," Ramirez added."
With the loss, FPU drops to 8-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in GSAC play. With a playoff spot already solidified, the Sunbirds travel to face Point Loma Nazarene Saturday, October 31st to determine final GSAC standings. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm.
