Men's soccer post 2-0 shutout versus CBU

The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team earned a much needed GSAC win versus Cal Baptist Saturday afternoon in Riverside. The Sunbirds scored two second half goals and went on to shutout the Lancers 2-0.

FPU started the game well and after a scoreless first half, had the advantage in shots 4-3 and corners 2-0 at the break.

The Sunbirds would find their rhythm even further in the second half, and their diligence soon paid off.

FPU's Rodrigo Vianna Ferreira opened the scoring for the Sunbirds in the 70th minute after receiving a head flick by teammate Vitor Machado. Ferreira was quickest to react and buried his tenth goal of the campaign to give FPU the 1-0 lead.

Machado would then go from provider to goal-scorer in the 76th minute.

Freshman Paul Islas' pinpoint pass found Machado slightly into space, which he then slotted the ball passed the outreached hands of CBU goalkeeper Jeff Redinger to give FPU the 2-0 cushion.

Tough and gritty defending and a solid performance by Fresno Pacific goalkeeper Gildardo Villarruel completed the job for the 2-0 win.

"This was the best 90 minute performance we have had this season," complimented FPU head coach Jaime Ramirez.

With the win, the Sunbirds now improve to 5-4-1 (1-2-1 GSAC) and will host Westmont College Wednesday, October, 13th at Ramirez field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
