Fresno, Cailf. – The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team faced a determined and organized #19 Concordia squad earlier this afternoon, losing to the Eagles 2-0 in a Golden State Athletic Conference matchup. The two goals were all CUI needed to defeat the Sunbirds, and help them stay atop of the GSAC.
The first Eagle's strike came in the 15th minute on a CUI corner kick. FPU goalkeeper #Brandon Cave# misread the flight of an Eagle's corner kick, allowing the ball to arc up and over his outreached hands, leaving CUI's Eric Mendoza at the weak side to head it in for the games first goal.
Both teams would create more scoring chances during the first half of play, recording eight shots a piece. With neither team converting anything further, the first half would end competitively, but with the Sunbirds trailing 1-0.
The Eagles seemed to turn it up another gear to open the second half, and would find the back of the net once again in the 59th minute on another set play. Concordia was awarded a free kick from outside the penalty area that resulted in a direct shot on goal. Cave was able to make the initial save, but left a rebound that Eagle's Jon Fahey was able to pounce on and score to extend CUI's lead to 2-0.
Shortly after that, things would go from bad to worse for the Sunbirds when #Fernando Ferrari's# was ejected from the match in the 69th minute after having received his second yellow card of the contest, which is a red card equivalent. FPU would have to play the remainder of the game a man down with only ten players.
FPU would continue to battle, but simply could not muster any real attack in the second half, recording only two shots to CUI's eleven.
With the loss, the Sunbirds fall to 8-5-1 (4-3-1 GSAC) and will be back in action Tuesday, October 28th when they host The Master's College at Ramirez Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00PM.
