Santa Barbara, Cailf. – The FPU women's soccer team was outdone this afternoon as they traveled to face Westmont College, falling to the Warriors by a score of 4-1. The Sunbirds had a promising start, but were unable to contain the Warrior's Amy Lawson who recorded two goals and an assist in the contest.
The Sunbirds were able to hold off Westmont until the 29th minute when Lawson was able to intercept an FPU pass and convert a powerful shot into the upper left corner from 18 yards out. Lawson would strike again in the closing minutes of the first half with another blast, this time from just inside the 18 yard box in the 44th minute to give Westmont the 2-0 advantage going into halftime.
With another positive start in the second half, the Sunbirds were able to maintain some possession and put the Warriors on the defensive for the first 10 minutes, creating a few chances in the process.
“At halftime we discussed the fact that although we were down 2-0, one goal would change everything,” revealed Sunbird head coach #Erik Farfan#. “Unfortunately, the first goal of the second half went Westmont's way and not ours.”
The Warriors were able to quickly retake control of the game in the 55th when Amy Lawson made a strong run with the ball down the right side of the field to the end line, then passed the ball back to teammate Kylie Hawkins who slotted it past FPU goalkeeper #Justine Caldera# to make it 3-0. Westmont's Jenna Nelson would then round out the scoring for the Warriors a short time later in the 60th minute on a shot that found the left corner of the FPU net.
To their credit, the Sunbirds continued to battle and would eventually get one back in the 67th minute. FPU's #Ashley Sherr# recorded her 8th assist on a beautifully played corner kick that found the head of junior defender #Dani Dickie#. Dickie was able to read the ball to perfection, smashing it into the back of the Warrior net to record her third goal of the year, and finish what would amount to a consolation goal for the Sunbirds.
” I was really proud of the team for not giving up and continuing to compete despite the score,” commended Farfan.” Dani really attacked the ball and scored a great goal…I just wish it could have been in the first twenty minutes of the game rather than the last.”
With the loss, the Sunbirds drop to 7-3-2 overall (3-3 GSAC) and will look to rebound in their next match as they host #6 Cal Baptist this Saturday, October 18th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00PM
