AZUSA, Calif - The FPU women's soccer team struggled today as they traveled to face #2 Azusa Pacific. The Sunbirds gave up two early goals in the first half to set the stage for an eventual 6-0 defeat at the hands of the nationally ranked Cougars.
APU's first goal came in the 3rd minute when Theresa Broad was able to beat FPU goalkeeper Justine Caldera on a 1 v1 after receiving a through ball from teammate Lynsey Domene. The Cougars would score again just four minutes later off of a corner when Sarah Yoro was able to convert a rebounded ball teammate Bridget Brotherton had attempted to head in. After a slow and difficult start, the Sunbirds were finally able to pick up their level of play and disrupted the APU attack finishing the first half of play trailing 2-0.
“Considering how we started, we felt fortunate to make it to half trailing by just two,” explained FPU head coach Erik Farfan. “Our intent was to hold them from scoring any further in the second (half) and try to get back in the match. We did feel that we were able to start the second half with more determination and purpose, but unfortunately, that wasn't enough against a team of their caliber.”
Although the Sunbirds were able to tighten up defensively to begin the second half, the Cougars would continue their onslaught with goals coming in the 57th, 63rd, 76th, and 77th minute.
“Unfortunately, we didn't play to our potential today and came out very flat,” admitted Farfan. “We weren't able to establish much rhythm or possession throughout the majority of the match and had limited chances. Credit to Azusa…they played well…and we didn't. It was evident this afternoon why they are ranked #2 in the country.”
With the loss the Sunbirds drop to 5-1-2 (1-1) but will look to regroup and redeem themselves as they travel to face #22 Vanguard University of Southern California this Saturday October 4rh. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00PM.
