POMONA, Calif. – Kicking off the Claremont Convergence Tournament, the Fresno Pacific women's water polo team started the day with a victory over Whittier at the Allred Aquatics Center. Later, a true battle played out as the Sunbirds took on La Salle in a 6-14 match to split the day.
GAME 1 | FPU 11, WHITTIER 6
The Sunbirds' offense was bolstered by four power-play goals and three penalty shots, contributing significantly to their commanding performance.
Fresno Pacific took an early lead against Whittier when
Dakota Lambert scored a penalty shot in the first quarter. Whittier quickly responded with a goal to level the score. The teams continued to exchange goals, with
Maggie Cook scoring, assisted by
Frances Benson, but Whittier's Fernandez equalized yet again. The Sunbirds then pulled ahead with a goal by
Sofia DeRollo, assisted by
Sierra Coyne. The third quarter saw the Sunbirds dominate, scoring five consecutive goals, including two by
Regan Azevedo, bringing the score to 11-5 by the end of the quarter. Whittier managed to add one more goal late in the fourth quarter, but the 'Birds secured a decisive 11-6 victory, outshooting Whittier 25-29.
Lambert led the scoring for the 'Birds with a hat trick, a steal and a block. M. Cook matched Lambert with her own hat trick, adding an assist and drawing four exclusions in the process. Coyne facilitated the offense with three assists and added two steals and a block to her performance.
GAME 2 | FPU 6, LA SALLE 14
In the first period, La Salle started strong with a 2-0 lead. The Sunbirds responded with two goals from
Emma Cook, including one that leveled the score at 2-2. La Salle then pulled ahead, extending the lead to 4-2 by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, La Salle continued pushing the advantage until they reached 7-2. Despite
Maggie Cook's efforts for the Sunbirds, contributing a goal in the second quarter, La Salle maintained control. They sealed the win with a final goal, concluding the game with a 14-6 victory.
Both Cook sisters led the offense with hat tricks, Maggie hitting her second of the day to make it six overall. In goal,
Evalena Filippi was effective, making six saves and recording four steals, anchoring the defensive efforts.
