FRESNO, Calif. — Back on their home court, Fresno Pacific women's tennis narrowly fell to DI opponent Weber State Women's Tennis 3-4 on Thursday at the Haak Tennis Complex. The Sunbirds secured victories in the top two singles matches and won the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spot.
"It's always hard to lose a close match," said head coach
Sam Gaeddert. "The ladies really felt like they had it up until the very end. I am proud of the fight everyone showed on court."
FPU secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Freshman
Fabiana Gonzalez, currently ranked 58th in the nation in singles, and
Yume Ueoku opened with a 6-3 win over the Johnson duo at No. 2 doubles.
Halle Faherty and
Jessica McLean clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Unfortunately, the third doubles match went to Weber State as they defeated Margarita Munoz and
Malia Mitchell 6-4.
In singles play, No. 58 Gonzalez gave the Sunbirds an early lead with a straight-set victory over Weber's Song, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Weber State responded by taking the next three matches. On court five, McLean fell 2-6, 5-7, while Munoz lost 2-6, 1-6 on court four. Faherty put up a valiant fight on court three but Weber state extended the lead with a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Mitchell's effort on court six fell short as she lost a tightly contested match to WSU's Johnson, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. In the final singles match, Ueoku provided a strong performance for FPU, defeating Hill 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Despite this victory, it was not enough to overcome the overall deficit, and Weber State secured the match, 3-4.
"We are getting better and better each match that we play. I think this result shows us that we can compete with anyone, in any division. We're excited to bring it back to conference play tomorrow at home against Concordia."
