FRESNO, Calif. - Closing out the home stand with a midweek match, Fresno Pacific women's water polo fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 18-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Sanger High.
Cal State Monterey Bay took command early in the match. Fresno Pacific responded with a goal from
Regan Azevedo, who took a a pass from
Frances Benson. Spreading the wealth, Azevedo sent the next pass to
Sofia DeRollo to find the back of the net for the second FPU goal of the match. The Otters extended their lead, closing the first quarter at 5-2. The second quarter saw Monterey Bay dominate, scoring five consecutive goals, including a power-play goal as they held off the 'Birds offensive attempts.
By the end of the third quarter, Monterey Bay had increased its lead to 13-2, shutting out the Sunbirds. The Blue and Orange didn't give up hope, swimming through the water to secure steals and drawn exclusions. Early in the fourth quarter,
Maggie Cook changed the tide with a powerplay goal, assisted by
Dakota Lambert. However, Monterey Bay maintained its momentum, finishing with an 18-3 victory over FPU.
NEXT UP: The 'Birds are on the road! Fresno Pacific competes in conference matches against Biola and Concordia on Friday and Saturday respectively. The team will return to Fresno for their final regular season match against UC Merced on April 1st.
