FRESNO, Calif. - Up against Biola, the undefeated WWPA leader, the Fresno Pacific women's water polo team valiantly fought to score on Friday afternoon. Three Sunbird players were able to beat the defense, including on a penalty goal, but it wasn't enough to close the gap as the Eagles soared ahead 18-3.
Biola established early control in the first quarter, jumping to a 4-0 advantage by the end of the period. The Eagles extended their lead to 6-0 in the second quarter, but the Sunbirds did not give up hope. Fresno Pacific got on the board with a penalty shot by key scorer
Dakota Lambert at 2:27. However, the Eagles responded quickly with a penalty shot of their own, ending the half at 7-1.
In the third quarter,
Emma Cook answered for the Sunbirds, taking a brilliant pass from her sister
Maggie Cook to bring the score to 8-2. The Sunbirds did an incredible job holding off the Eagles in the third, only allowing a single goal. With only a minute and a half remaining in the fourth,
Sierra Coyne was the final Sunbird to score, assisted by
Regan Azevedo. Unfortunately, Biola dominated the final quarter, scoring five goals to seal a 13-3 victory.
Fresno Pacific women's water polo has a record of 6-17 overall, going 1-5 in the WWPA.
