FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's tennis edged Dominican with a thrilling 4-3 victory on Saturday at the Haak Tennis Center. The Sunbirds clinched the match by winning four singles matches despite dropping the doubles point.
Dominican secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Gavrilov and Lo. Foster-Simbulan opened the scoring with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles over
Halle Faherty and
Jessica McLean. Dominican clinched the point as Ana Rios and Deepa Vanaraja posted a 6-3 result at No. 3 doubles against
Malia Mitchell and Margarita Munoz. FPU's
Yume Ueoku and
Fabiana Gonzalez claimed a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Kaylee Lopez and Sofia Acuna.
In singles, Ueoku leveled the overall match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Gavrilov. Gonzalez added another point for the Sunbirds at No. 2 singles, defeating Acuna 6-2, 6-3. Munoz extended FPU's lead with a comeback 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lopez at No. 4 singles.
Malia Mitchell's match left unfinished at No. 6 singles against Foster-Simbulan, who led 6-2, 1-0.
Jessica McLean's match at No. 5 singles against Rios resulted in a close 6-3, 5-7, 6-7(5) loss, making the team score 3-2 in favor of FPU. Faherty clinched the match for the Sunbirds with a three-set win at No. 3 singles, overcoming Vanaraja 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"It was a great team win today!" stated head coach
Sam Gaeddert. "I'm proud of how we rallied after dropping the doubles point. They fought on every court and I felt the confidence from all the players throughout the matches. Now we have a short rest before more home conference matches this week."
The women's team is 5-4 overall after their crucial conference win over Dominican. The 'Birds fly into a heavy week of play as they take on Biola (Tuesday), Westmont (Wednesday), Menlo (Thursday), and Cal State Los Angeles (Saturday). Come down to the Haak Tennis Complex to cheer on your Sunbirds!
