FRESNO, Calif. - While simultaneously competing and hosting the Sunbird Invitational, Fresno Pacific track and field turned in an impressive two days of competition, collecting multiple event victories, personal-best performances, and strong relay finishes across both the men's and women's squads.
Sprint events set the tone early for the Sunbirds.
Shemar Palmer delivered a standout showing in the 100 meters, clocking 10.54, before returning to win the 200 meters in 20.85. On the women's side,
Nydia Chance posted a strong 11.77 in the 100 meters, while
Mikiyla Royal captured first place in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 23.97.
In the hurdles,
Jonathan Biffle claimed victory in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 14.30. The women's hurdle group showcased depth and development, as
Avril Mendoza,
Cyan Haslip, and
Clara Wagner each recorded personal-best performances in the 100-meter hurdles. Mendoza continued her stellar day by winning the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 58.69.
The Sunbirds dominated the throwing events behind powerful performances from
Chavez Grey, who swept both the discus (49.81m) and shot put (16.08m).
Eric Romero added a strong showing in the discus, recording a personal-best mark of 44.06 meters. In the javelin the 'Birds went 1-2 with
Tevž Podlipnik delivered a winning throw of 65.71 meters with senior
Zach Sims the runner-up.
Fresno Pacific also excelled in the field events.
Kyrin Coilton cleared 1.58 meters to claim first place in the women's high jump, while
Shane Bagley captured the pole vault title with a clearance of 4.87 meters.
Jackson Paramo followed closely behind, taking second at 4.26 meters.
Relay events capped off a strong day for the Sunbirds. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of the Haslip sisters, Royal, and
Iyanna Fuller surged to a first-place finish. The women's 4x400-meter relay squad of
Kenahdi Haslip,
Shaniya Randolph,
Emma O'Neil and
Mattie Whipple also claimed the top spot. On the men's side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Palmer,
Ian Palsgaard,
Aidan Ransom, and
Monte Moore finished second, trailing only Division I Fresno State.
Overall, both Fresno Pacific teams earned first-place finishes with the men collecting 184 points and the women earning 230.5 in total.
