ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Both of the Fresno Pacific tennis teams defeated PacWest conference opponent Jessup on Saturday at the Johnson Ranch Sports Club North. The Sunbird men clinched their first win of the season thanks to Salinas who captured the final point to end it 5-2. The Lady 'Birds swept past Jessup with a dominant 7-0 showing to boost their record to 3-0 overall.
The Lady 'Birds swept all six singles matches and won all three doubles matches. Fresno Pacific secured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches at the Johnson Ranch Sports Club North.
Fabiana Gonzalez and
Yume Ueoku claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Halle Faherty and
Jessica McLean followed with a decisive 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 doubles match was left incomplete with
Jasmine Palomera and
Emma Jenan standing in for FPU.
In singles, the Sunbirds dominated across the board. Ueoku defeated Smith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Faherty added a point by overcoming Reschke 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. McLean continued the streak with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Maloney at No. 3 singles. Margarita Munoz secured another win at No. 4 singles, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-0.
Jasmine Palomera completed a 6-1, 6-1 win against Davila at No. 5 singles, while
Emma Jenan's match at No. 6 singles was marked unfinished with a commanding lead, allowing her to win by default.
"This was the best we have looked this year as a complete team this season," mentioned head coach
Sam Gaeddert. "I saw a lot of mental toughness and a lot of grit. It's great to watch the hard work from our practices paying dividends in our conference matches. We will keep taking things day by day and pushing to get better."
The Sunbird men captured their first win of the season against the Oaks! Fresno Pacific secured the triumph by winning four of the six singles matches and claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Emilio Seelbach and
Jordi Gonzalez won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, while
Tim Bangert and
Ryoma Okamoto claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. Jessup captured the match on No. 1 doubles, narrowly defeating No. 24
Cedric Kaufman and
Joaquin Salinas 7-5.
In singles action, Fresno Pacific extended its lead with Seelbach's 6-3, 6-2 win over Lucas Pham at No. 2 singles. Jessup responded with a point at No. 3 singles as Curiel defeated Angel Espana 6-1, 6-1. Fresno Pacific regained momentum with Gonzalez's 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles. Bangert closed out his match at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win. The Blue and Orange continued its winning streak when Salinas earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles, clinching the win for the 'Birds.
