FPU Esports Gear Up For Next Week of Competition

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific Esports team met resistance in their second week of competition, but the Rocket League Orange team had a thrilling match against Cal State Dominguez Hills Rainstorm to capture the third spot in conference.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 1-2
The FPU Smash team started off their season with a close loss to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. The Sunbirds took the first set with five stocks remaining and entered the second set with confidence. It looked to be a repeat of the first set to start with the Miners down to their last three stocks and six remaining for the 'Birds but some great plays by Kroolmakopia on King Krool for the Miners swept the set in their favor and the third followed suit. Captain Forsaur (Forrest Gray) carried the team with 24 stocks taken singlehandedly. Fresno Pacific looks forward to making playoffs and seeing the Miners there for a rematch.

Marvel Rivals: 0-3
FPU Marvel Rivals continued to iron out the wrinkles in their communication and gameplay after another defeat to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. Despite the loss, the match showed the beginnings of progress from the Sunbirds. The team tasted a morsel of victory after securing the first control map of the series proving to the team and the league that they are capable contenders. The Blue and Orange put up a good fight with captain Blizzzzyy_ (Blake Johnson) going 40 eliminations and will look forward to next week's matchup!

Rocket League: 4-0
Week two was an exciting one for FPU Rocket League. With half of Blue team traveling this week for a school event, their match against Fort Lewis Navy was rescheduled to later in the season. Orange team had an excellent week going 4-0 against CSU Domingez Hills Rainstorm. The Sunbirds pulled ahead early in each match and scored a cumulative 15 goals to the Toros' 5. Smokie (Estevan Gonzalez) led the Sunbirds with 8 goals, 4 assists, 5 saves, and 18 shots on goal. The team moves up to third in conference and looks forward to their next match against CSU San Bernadino.

Overwatch 2: 0-3
Travel and prior commitments struck hard this week for the Sunbirds with several key players absent from last Friday's match against Fort Lewis Gold. FPU's bench stepped up and gave a valiant effort but could not stop a three-game sweep by the Skyhawks. The Sunbirds head into the next week ready and hungry for a win.
