FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's tennis edged out Stanislaus State on Saturday's home opener at the Haak Tennis Complex. The Sunbirds secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and clinched the match with singles wins at the top three slots, ending the tough match 4-3.
"Big win for the ladies in our season home opener," proudly stated head coach
Sam Gaeddert. "Stanislaus is always a hard team to play. We started slow, but it was a full team effort getting to four points and I'm happy with the competitive spirit we showed on court.
FPU secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two.
Fabiana Gonzalez and
Yume Ueoku defeated Emma Yu and Abbigail Mulick 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while
Halle Faherty and
Jessica McLean clinched the point with a 7-5 win over Katrine Damkjaer and Parker Orlando at No. 2 doubles. Stan State picked up a win at No. 3 doubles when Maiah White and Emi Mikami overcame
Malia Mitchell and Margarita Munoz, 7-6.
In singles play,
Jessica McLean quickly added to the Sunbirds' lead with a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, overcoming Parker Orlando 6-3, 6-0. Gonzalez continued the momentum at No. 1 singles, dispatching Emma Yu 6-3, 6-1. Faherty contributed another point for FPU by defeating Damkjaer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Stanislaus State responded with three consecutive singles wins. Maiah White defeated Munoz 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, while Ueoku secured FPU's final singles point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mulick at No. 2 singles. The match concluded with a win for Mikami at No. 6 singles, where she bested Mitchell 7-5, 6-4.
The 'Birds are currently 2-0 overall.
