'Birds Fly to Vegas for Final Stretch of Regular Season

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Fresno Pacific swimming and diving team entered the final stretch of the regular season as they flew down for a dual match against UNLV on Saturday morning. The Sunbirds competed well against the DI powerhouse, participating in several new events and challenges.

Overall, the Sunbird Men finished with a score of 89-127, whereas the Lady 'Birds closed out the meet 82.50-138.50. Despite the odds, the team brought high energy and determination into the dual meet, fighting in every event to the best of their ability.

For the men, Laurens Privo and August Ottesen secured second-place and third-place in the 25 Yard Freestyle, trailing behind the Nevada competitor by twenty seconds. Ottesen, Privo, Kai Aus, and Tony Montes came in second in the 100 Yard Relay, coming in at 41.42. Following soon after, Nico Barna had a great showing in the 75 Yard Breaststroke, closing at 42.60 which was two seconds off the Rebel in first-place. Santiago Schutte also had a strong contribution to the Sunbirds board, taking first in the 75 Yard Freestyle (33.47).

On the women's side, Mia Manno and Hermione Roe were neck-in-neck in the 75 Yard Butterfly, closing out 43.16 and 43.81, respectively. Natalie Noble came second in the 150 Backstroke with a time of 1:47.37. In the relays, both FPU squads competed valiantly in the 250 Freestyle with Tora Nordli, Jillian Lambert, Hermione Roe, and Mia Manno sealed the first-place spot with a time of 2:11.32. Caitlyn Sakamoto, Katelyn Onyekwelu, Anja Gunnsteinsdottir, and Mia Buller were right behind them, coming in at 2:23.41.

Assistant coach Rebeca Bribiesca Spears mentioned, "It was a fun meet with some different and new events. The swimmers enjoyed the change while staying locked in and racing fast. It was great to do something a little different."

NEXT UP: The Sunbirds have one final regular season meet before the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships between February 11-14. The 'Birds will head over to Santa Barbara on Friday, February 20th to conclude regular season competition.
