Sunbirds Score Against Reigning Champs

POMONA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team captured their first goal of the season against reigning NCAA Division II national champions, Cal Poly Pomona. The goal was scored by freshman Abby Cano Ledezma in the second half of the match.

"Beyond proud of the effort the group put forth tonight against the defending national champions. We hung in there for 60 minutes with a tough team and had great moments," said head coach Roberto Hernandez. "It's not the result we wanted but there are many good takeaways to build on. It's a process and we are excited about the future!"

Cal Poly Pomona had a string of offside calls, with four occurring before the period ended, interrupting their offensive momentum. Despite multiple shots from Pomona, including a close attempt in the 40th minute, Fresno Pacific's defense held strong, keeping the score 1-0 at the end of the first half. Jessup transfer Lille Amies stepped between the bars and tallied nine saves over the course of the match.

The second half began with freshman forward Abby Cano Ledezma finding the back of the net in the 47th minute, leveling the score 1-1.

Cano's offensive effort not only brought energy to the Sunbirds' offense, but marked her first collegiate goal as a Sunbird.

In the end, Pomona secured a commanding 4-1 victory after collecting three additional goals in the second half.

NEXT UP: The women's soccer team heads to San Rafael on Saturday, September 13th for a morning match against Cal Poly Humboldt at 11:30 am.
