SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The FPU women's soccer team competed against Cal Poly Humboldt in a neutral match, and ultimately fell to the Lumberjacks 1-3.
The Sunbirds and Lumberjacks concluded a tightly contested first half with Cal Poly Humboldt holding a 1-0 lead. Despite the Sunbirds' four shots, including two from
Takoah Castillo that were saved by Humboldt's goalkeeper, they could not find the back of the net. Humboldt capitalized on their opportunities, scoring in the 31st minute of the match.
The Sunbirds' second-half effort allowed them to claw back with a goal by Castillo in the 58th minute, bringing the score to 2-1. The Sonoma State transfer netted her first goal of the season, adding to the Sunbirds late-budding momentum. In the end, Humboldt's third goal in the 74
th minute sealed the victory.
The Blue and Orange did their best to minimize their opponents' offensive strategies. In the goal,
Ayana Kirisimasi and
Lille Amies were goalkeepers for the Sunbirds, tallying five saves and one save respectively.
"Not the way we'd hope it would go, but it's all part of the process," said head coach
Roberto Hernandez. "We have a lot of new players and we are growing our chemistry both on and off the field, one step at a time. Proud of the effort of the team, now back to the drawing board, we will continue to get better and hope to showcase it versus Merced on Tuesday!"
NEXT UP: The women's team has a short trip up Highway 99 to face UC Merced on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00pm.
