'Birds Rally In Thrilling Five-Set Victory

Elliott Leads The Charge Versus the Warriors

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific rallied in a thrilling five-set match against Jessup University to bump their overall record to 9-0. The Sunbirds secured the victory with scores of 25-14, 25-22, 24-26, 27-29, and 15-10. Fresno Pacific's attack was led by Geneva Elliott in the fifth set, helping them maintain their unbeaten record.

Offensively, middle Geneva Elliott led the Sunbirds with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .696, contributing 18 points over five sets. Graduate setter Mikayla Weiss distributed 53 assists while also adding 13 digs to her performance. Cambria Waites recorded 22 digs, complementing her 13 kills and 7 assists.

In the first set, Madelyn Feramisco and Makayla Smith contributed crucial kills, helping Fresno Pacific establish a 4-0 advantage. Although Jessup managed to score, a series of errors on their part allowed Fresno Pacific to maintain control. The momentum remained with the Sunbirds as Elliott and Waites delivered successful kills, extending the lead.

Fresno Pacific held off a late rally from Jessup, who reduced the gap with effective blocking and timely kills. Waites sparked the offense with an insane over pass kill to make it 23 in the second set. However, Fresno Pacific closed out the period with a decisive kill by Feramisco, securing a 25-22 win and maintaining their advantage in the match.

The Sunbirds struggled in the third, with Jessup maintaining a 2-point lead throughout the match. Despite strong efforts from players like Makayla Smith and Addison McKarcher, Fresno Pacific faced challenges as Jessup capitalized on attack errors to gain a slight edge. The period concluded with Jessup narrowly securing a 26-24 victory.

The fourth set began with Jessup taking an early 3-0 lead, capitalizing on attack errors by the 'Birds. Waites and Weiss were the first to respond for the Sunbirds with a clever kill, but Jessup maintained their advantage, extending the score to 5-1. Soon after, a crucial block from McKarcher and Waites leveled the playing field 10-12.

The Sunbirds started building their momentum with Waites behind the serving line. Another big block on the right side by Geneva and Plantinga bumped the score to 20-22. It was followed soon after by a service ace from Feramisco, which forced a Warrior timeout. Plantinga, Waites, and Feramisco bounced a few balls to gain the lead, but the Warriors edged ahead, securing the period 29-27.

Rough start in the fifth set for the Sunbirds with the Warriors leading off 0-5. Geneva Elliott lit a spark in the team with a four-point scoring run, outsmarting the Warriors time and time again. Fresno Pacific continued to build momentum with a crucial block from Weiss and McKarcher, leveling the score 7-7. The home team then pulled ahead with a series of points, including a decisive kill by Sydney Hancock, pushing the score to 12-9. Weiss made the serve on game point, while Hancock and Plantinga blocked it straight down to win it all.

NEXT UP: A quick stop in San Rafael for the evening match against Dominican on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Then the undefeated 'Birds are back home on Thursday, Oct. 3 for the PacWest conference opener against Westmont at 6 pm.
