SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The undefeated Fresno Pacific volleyball team maintained its perfect record (10-0) with a clean sweep over Dominican on Tuesday night, dominating the match with scores of 25-13, 25-18, and 25-19.
The Sunbirds opened the first set strongly against the Penguins, quickly establishing momentum with a kill from
Madelyn Feramisco and sustained contributions from
Makayla Smith, who recorded multiple kills to keep the pressure on the home team. The Sunbirds built an early lead of 8-2, leveraging a service ace and capitalizing on opponent errors to maintain their advantage.
As the set progressed, the Blue and Orange continued to apply offensive pressure, with
Cambria Waites and
Geneva Elliott adding to the scoreboard, supported by a service ace from
Mikayla Weiss. The Sunbirds extended their lead to 15-9 and maintained control through effective attacking and forcing errors from the Penguins.
FPU opened the second set with an impactful start, capitalizing on an early attack error by the Penguins to take the first point. Waites led the charge with a series of successful plays, contributing a kill and two service aces to extend the lead to 9-3. The Sunbirds maintained momentum through the middle of the set with kills from
Addison McKarcher and Elliott. A solid defensive effort was highlighted by blocks from Waites and Elliott, which helped build an 18-10 advantage. Towards the end of the set,
Yajaira Gahagan and Weiss facilitated a strong closing run.
Fresno Pacific maintained control in the third set with effective offensive plays, including a kill by Gahagan, extending the lead to 11-7.
Sydney Hancock's kills played a crucial role, helping the Sunbirds to pull ahead 22-16. Despite a brief scoring push by Dominican, Aguayo and Gahagan's late kills sealed the set for the 'Birds.
Waites led the team with four service aces and contributed 12 digs over three sets. Weiss recorded 16 assists and added nine digs overall. Elliott posted a hitting percentage of .571 with five kills and four total blocks over two sets. Smith led the offense with nine kills with a .333 hitting percentage and four digs across three sets.
Fresno Pacific holds a perfect 10-0 record, which has sparked attention on the national level. As mentioned in the latest AVCA national poll, the 'Birds are receiving votes and have a chance at climbing their way to the Top 25. Senior middle blocker
Geneva Elliott also made her presence known after securing fifth in the nation in hitting percentage. The Sunbirds are blazing a historic path for FPU volleyball with head coach
Kelsee Montagna at the helm.
"Good start to the long week ahead of us. We executed the game plan, stayed relaxed and continued to grow," said Montagna. "We distributed the ball well and were able to see some new things we've been working on. It was a full team effort."
NEXT UP: The undefeated 'Birds are back at home for the PacWest Conference Opener on Friday, Oct. 3. The Sunbirds face off against Westmont for the first conference match of the season at 6 pm. Saturday evening will showcase the conference matchup between FPU and Concordia at 5 pm.
