SURPRISE, Ariz.- The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds faced off in the PacWest constellation bracket against the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans with a commanding performance in doubles, setting the tone early.
The Sunbirds secured the doubles point by swiftly taking courts two and three. On court two, the duo of
Gregor Kliimask and
Martin Ramirez overwhelmed their opponents, Coby Pearce and Jaime Paquet, with a flawless 6-0 shutout. Meanwhile,
Brodie Sodersten and
Emilio Seelbach followed up with a confident 6-3 victory on court three over Filippo Di Perno and Yu Jhe Du. Court one, featuring
Sven Bangert and
Ben Cronau for the 'Birds, was left unfinished, but the early dominance ensured the Sunbirds walked into singles play with momentum.
In singles, the match evolved into a tense back-and-forth battle. Hawai'i Hilo responded quickly, evening the score as Jaime Paquet defeated Ravi Nelson in straight sets on court one. However, the 'Birds answered with grit and determination. Cronau overcame a one-set deficit to beat Yu Jhe Du in a three-set showdown on court five, and Cedric Kaufman delivered a clutch performance on court four, edging Agustin Gentile in another tight three-setter. Perhaps the most thrilling win came from Sodersten, who showcased endurance and poise under pressure to win 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 on court two.
Although Iori Furuhata earned a dominant win for Hawai'i Hilo on court six, Fresno Pacific's ability to close out high-stakes singles matches ultimately secured the 4-2 team victory.
